SAT 10/17: Eulogy at the Artery

Group show Eulogy opens this Saturday at the Artery. Yep, the gallery housed in a couple of old shipping containers behind the lab (wow, the lab's website is so hip, it hurts). Eulogy includes work by Quyen Dinh, Jeff Gillette, Kelly Castillo, Jared Millar, Krystie Sargent (whose hand painted skateboard is pictured above), Patrick Nguyen, Aileen Holmes, and Alex Chiu. The Artery is @ 2930 Bristol St in Costa Mesa. The opening is 7-11:00pm and boasts DJ Treetop providing the sound entertainment.

SAT 10/17: Jophen Stein at The Box

The 5 Deadly Senses, Jophen Stein's newest series and solo exhibition at The Box gallery, opens this Saturday 7-10:00pm. The work explores romantic comedy, inspired by early Hollywood musicals and motifs affiliated with the genre. Stein is a LCAD alumnus and has apparently been banned, along with his artistic creation The Snootson Family Showcase, from the states of Iowa and Idaho. Curious! The evening will include drinks and music courtesy of DJ Kristina B. The exhibition runs through December 5th.

FRI 10/16: Film Free-for-All at The Hammer

I attended the Hammer's previous installment of Open Projector night with a friend, and found the no-holds-barred democratic process to be delightful fun. It's an open forum to scream praise or criticism of each film amid the darkened crowd! Free entrance, a cash bar and free popcorn also contribute to the allure. I recommend being brave and entering your film (10min or less), or just heading down to enjoy the rowdy crowd, films and Emcee Seth Morris (San Franciscan comedian and Artistic Director of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater LA). Submissions accepted from 7 to 7:30pm. Accepted media formats: VHS, DVD, Mini DV & Mini HDV, Super 8mm, 8mm, and 16mm film. Parking is available under the museum for $3 after 6:00p.m.

FRI 10/2: The Idyllists rock for a good cause

One of LA's most beloved local bands, The Idyllists, are bringing their convivial mix of 60s Britpop and American pop to the Hotel Cafe this Friday night, Oct 2nd, with all door charge proceeds benefitting the LA County Firefighters Memorial Fund. In particular, the show will honor two firefighters felled by the Station Fire August 30th. A worthy cause, and laudable music. Hooray! They go on at 10:00pm, don't be late.

SUN 9/27: good morning Bon Iver

Hollywood Forever Cemetery's gates will creak open tonight at midnight to kick off a unique show, orchestrated by Justin Vernon (Wisconsinite and founder/face of Bon Iver) and The Troubadour. The concept, a sunrise performance, was hatched as the pièce de résistance, wrapping up Bon Iver's almost two year tour. The schedule is rumored to include film and music presentations, hand-selected by Vernon, which will entertain the concert-goers until the show begins at sunrise: 5:20am. All will be welcomed into the day by Bon Iver's soulful stereophonic swells and fades.

Off to the Big Apple

The Heathers are jetting to NYC for a little while, to see and do as much as possible. One of the things they're most anticipating is checking out the newly recreated Keith Haring mural on Houston and Bowery. It was originally created by Haring in 1982, but remained on the wall for only a few months before being painted over. In honor of what would have been Haring's 50th birthday (5/4/08), the mural has been repainted and will remain until 12/21/08.

Against the Grain opens at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions this Thurs 6/12, 7-9pm. The show is curated by LA-based artist Christopher Russell and features works by Brian Bress (partial view of Plains Fight above)- whose collages are like wondrous fantasy worlds, Wendell Gladstone, Julian Hoeber, Brian Kennon, Amy Sarkisian, and Ami Tallman, among others. In honor of LACE's 30th anniversary, this show is a nod to their 1988 show Against Nature: A Group Show of Work by Homosexual Men, which exposed the margins of the already marginalized world of gay men. Against the Grain will be on view through 8/10.

Cal State Fullerton's Grand Central Art Center is showing some 155 Polaroids and photos taken by pop-art-superstar Andy Warhol. The images depict notable socialites and Factory regulars alike, including Tatum O'Neal, John McEnroe, Jon Gould, Constance Young, and Mary Tyler Moore. Also captured are rare still life images and landscapes of flea markets, a Halloween parade, beaches, dogs, and Japanese toys. The photos were a gift from the Andy Warhol Foundation and will be on display through 6/16.

The HB International Surfing Museum is currently running Surf Sounds part 2: Featuring Jan & Dean and Sharing Perspectives: Paintings by Celine Chat. The Surfing Museum preserves an important part of Huntington Beach's image as "Surf City, USA," and further exemplifies the fact that HB is the "most heavily surfed beach on the West Coast" (per Surfer's Almanac). The 9th annual Newport Beach Film Festival opened last night with the highly publicized Sherman's Way at Edward's Big Newport and a celeb-attended gala. The festival runs weeknights and weekend days through Thurs 5/01, and is jam packed with features and shorts, and will even showcase a few US premieres. I'm particularly enthralled by the looks of Good Dick, starring Jason Ritter and Marianna Palka, playing at 8pm tonight at Regency Lido Theater.

In conjunction with the MOCA's presentation of Allan Kaprow Art as Life, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions is showing a re-invention of Kaprow's seminal Happening– 18 Happenings in 6 Parts – originally presented in 1959 at the Reuben Gallery in New York. Chicano Art & Soul: Three Exhibitions in One, presented by Cheech Marin, is currently showing at Muzeo in Anaheim. The show, which opened in January and has been extended by popular demand until 5/18, includes the work of 30+ prominent Chicano artists, and presents a 360-degree view of the Chicano experience. Muzeo is located at 241 S. Anaheim Blvd, Anaheim 92805. Museum hours are everyday 10-5 and tickets are $10. In trying to determine who is included in the exhibition, I discovered two additional artists who, though they're not featured (I don't think), have some amazing work to be viewed: John Zender Estrada (partial view pictured above) and Jaime "Germs" Zacarias, both Los Angeles natives.

I just found this blog, Monster Munching, that has been reviewing local restaurants since 2003. Needless to say, after 5 years, there are a plethora of useful reviews upon which to base your culinary adventures. It seems that the blogger, Elmo, has a penchant for asian food, as there are lots of reviews of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean places. . .yum! And from what I've read, Elmo responds to every comment posted. How kind.

Crystal Castles is a Toronto-based band, described by Loud and Quiet as "the most exciting and original band in the world right now" consisting of multi-instrumentalist Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass. Blek Le Rat's first US solo show, Art is not Peace but War, is at Subliminal Projects through 5/2. Le Rat is acknowledged as being a pioneer of graffiti writing in Europe and was one of the first people to use stencils to make public art instead of writing his name. He was first exposed to graffiti in 1971 in New York, but didn’t start making his own until ten years later in Paris. Banksy is quoted as saying of him, "everytime I think I've painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek Le Rat has done it as well. Only twenty years earlier." David Trulli's All Lines are Busy, a collection of new work that explores modern human networks, is open at Robert Berman Gallery through 4/28. Mr. Trulli works in scratchboard: a white clay-coated board, covered with black ink. Fine knives are used to delicately scrape the ink away, creating the image. I just read an article on Kingsley Amis and his interesting, albeit thorough, manner of consuming alcohol. He's said to have invented the "Tigne Rose," which consists of one part gin, one part whisky, one part rum, one part vodka and one part brandy. Wow, now that's a drink. On Drink, a collection of columns originally written for daily newspapers, sounds like a great way to get inside his head. Which is somewhere that I'd certainly like to explore.

They spent their childhood days playing in the grass and on the sand, and they never considered that they posessed any significant talents....until The Heathers Know was conceived. The girls found that they had quite the knack for uncovering what's exciting and fresh in the neighborhood. Luckily for you, dear readers, that neighborhood is Orange County. Oh, and just because they look nice doesn't mean that they are.
